Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®

Very commonly patients come to Lasting SkinSolutions® desiring Facial RestoreTM to look younger. They desire wrinkles be minimized in areas on their face such as frown lines, crows-feet, and lines around their mouth. However, we at Lasting SkinSolutions® have found that the fundamental cause of those wrinkles is repeated facial expressions and muscular contractions. Therefore, the desired results cannot be achieved with other treatments until the fundamental cause is addressed, which is muscular movement.

The use of localized muscle relaxing agents such as Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® can temporarily relax these types of wrinkles, thereby holding the skin in place to produce improved results with subsequent laser and/or filler treatments./Content/files/SkinCareLogos/BotoxLogo1.png

Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® treatments are ideally begun on patients in their 30’s and 40’s. It is at this age that wrinkles are usually beginning to form and can be addressed most easily. A Botox® treatment should be done at least once a year in order to allow the skin to remodel during the three-month period following treatment. This rest period, in which the facial muscles are allowed to relax, provides benefits long after the Botox® or Dysport® has dissipated.

Many of our clients come to Lasting SkinSolutions® when their wrinkles have become more visible. For these clients, a Botox® treatment will greatly enhance the effects of cosmetic laser treatments or fillers to get the best and longest lasting wrinkle correction.

While Botox® has become a household word, in recent years competitors such as Dysport® and Xeomin® have come to the market. While their chemical makeup is slightly different, their effects are similar. For simplicity, the term Botox® in this discussion is much like using the term Kleenex® when referring to facial tissues. /Content/files/SkinCareLogos/Dysport_Logo.png

Smiling and laughing are good things. But years of repeated facial expressions cause lines and wrinkles to develop and deepen, especially at the corners of the eyes and between the brows. Botox®, or Botulinum Toxin Type A, is a purified bovine protein which blocks the release of acetylcholine impulse to contract a muscle, and relaxes expression lines. A tiny amount injected over a localized muscle area will, over a few days to a few weeks, make wrinkles seem to disappear because they are no longer being created by the action of the muscle.

Frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet are softened and smoothed, giving you real, noticeable, natural looking results.

How do Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® Compare?
Type of neurotoxin FDA Approval Date Application Other

Botox® 2002 Cosmetic Use: Glabellar Lines “Botox Cosmetic" Onabotulinumtoxin A
Botox® 2004 Axillary Hyperhidrosis Onabotulinumtoxin A

Dysport® 2009 Cosmetic Use: Glabellar Lines; Cervical Dystonia Abobotulinumtoxin A
Xeomin® 2011 Eyelid Spasm/Cervical Dystonia Incobotulinumtoxin A

All three neurotoxins use a purified protein derived from a bacterium. It is used to block nerve signals, which cause muscle contractions and spasms, and to relax muscles in the body, including facial expressions.  Smiling, laughing, frowning and squinting all cause expression lines and wrinkles. Expression lines most commonly develop at the corners of the eyes, on the forehead and in the middle of the brows. These medications are injected by syringe in small amounts over a localized muscle and remains in the treated area.

Why Use Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®?

Facial expressions cause wrinkling of the skin, and over time, those wrinkles become deeper. These medications work by temporarily blocking the impulse from the nerve to the muscle.

Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® can be used to relax the muscles which cause certain wrinkles to develop in the first place. It is especially effective for lines around the eyes and mouth, which are caused by repeated muscle contractions over time. Combination treatments, such as Lasting SkinSolutions®’ patented Facial RestoreTM procedure, utilize lasers, fillers and muscle relaxing medications to address the underlying cause of wrinkles and aging.

How is Botox® done?

The procedure will last anywhere from 5-15 minutes, depending on how many areas are being treated. It is not uncommon to have a slight pinching sensation when the medicine is injected but this discomfort is minimal and fleeting. The more experienced the clinician, the less pain you will feel during the treatment. Bruising is possible but not common.

What results can I expect from Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®?

The results will begin to appear between 3 days and 2 weeks, with maximum effect achieved after 3-4 weeks. The effects of these medications can last, on average, three months. People who stay on a regular schedule of treatments will find that as time passes, each session’s results last a little longer, and wrinkles seem to disappear because they are no longer being created by the action of the muscle. Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®’s effectiveness decreases with age: The older you are, the less effective it will be, as deep expression lines may have already developed. These medications cannot completely eliminate deep wrinkles, which have persisted over time; but instead relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles to form or deepen.

What Risks and Precautions are associated with Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®?

Many people think that there is a risk of contracting botulism from these medications. This is false! You would have to swallow Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® in large amounts to contract botulism. People who should not have treatments are those known to be allergic, pregnant women, and people with certain neurological disorders or predisposed weakness in the area of treatment.  Your clinician will thoroughly review your medical history prior to treatment.
